St James Hatcham

Year 3 Chocolate workshop

Year 3 Chocolate workshop

The Year 3 students of St James Hatcham recently enjoyed a delicious and educational field trip to a local chocolate workshop, turning their ordinary school day into an extraordinary adventure in confectionery.

The pupils were immersed in the fascinating world of chocolate, learning about its journey from bean to bar.

The children had the exciting opportunity to learn about the different types of chocolate, including milk, dark, and white, and the unique ingredients that give each its flavour. A highlight of the workshop was discovering how chocolate is made. The class explored the various stages of production, from the harvesting of cacao beans and the fermentation process to the final steps of conching and tempering.

Beyond the sweet taste, the workshop provided a valuable lesson in sustainability and environmental factors. The children learned about the importance of fair trade practices, which ensure cacao farmers are paid fairly for their work, and the need for sustainable farming to protect the rainforest environment where cacao trees grow. This section of the workshop linked directly to the class's current topic on global environments and resources.

The trip was a truly hands-on experience, culminating in the students getting to create their own chocolate treats to take home. This practical activity cemented their learning and gave them a delicious souvenir of their day.

Mr Dempster praised the students for their engagement and curiosity throughout the day, noting that the trip was a perfect blend of fun and key educational themes. The class has returned with a greater appreciation for the treat and a deeper understanding of the processes and people involved in bringing chocolate to our tables.
